What I Learned Today

1. The cap on ACT Mouthwash is not baby proof.
2. A full bottle of ACT Mouthwash is not a suitable Favorite Toy of the Day.

The big cinnamon-red stain on our bedroom carpet now serves as a constant reminder of these two important facts.

Working Women

Meet my personal assistant. She sorts my junk mail, dusts my desktop, and listens to me brainstorm. In return, I pay her in storytime, hugs, and milk. And, lucky girl gets to work in her pajamas.

Life is Like a 50-Percent Off Box of Chocolates

We don't really celebrate Valentine's Day in our family. After all, we love each other every day, not just that one. (Ok ok, it's really that we both procrastinate too much...)

We do, however, take advantage of post-Valentine's Day candy discounts. And even though we considered $12.50 for a 50-percent off box of truffles a little steep, the extra mileage the packaging received as Favorite Toy of the Day made it worth every penny. And every calorie.

Close second as Favorite Toy of the Day: Mardi Gras beads and a plastic crawfish—straight from New Orleans!

Disobedient Baby

Nearly every day, Matt reminds Riley that she's not allowed to grow up anymore. So imagine his disappointment when we discovered her new little tooth this morning. Looks like daddy's got no authority around here.

Toothless grins like this will soon be a thing of the past. (Full disclosure: this picture is from December. She's long since outgrown those tiny barrettes!)

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

It was haircut day at the Richards household! We ventured to our favorite salon at nearby Rice Village where Matt got his shortest cut in at least three years, Riley got her FIRST cut ever, and, well, I just got the usual.

We were all pleased with our results. Riley's cut was particularly remarkable: in a few quick snips, my hairgirl transformed Riley's 'do from redneck mullet to chic a-line bob. Hippest hair ever? For 6-month old, maybe.

Baby Tricks

Riley has two favorite books: There's a Wocket in my Pocket by Dr. Seuss and Mirror Me, a Baby Einstein book. The sight of either makes her giddy enough to flap her arms. And we read them so often that I have both memorized, front to back. Sometimes, I even recite them to her while we're driving or out on a walk, and just that's enough to make her happy.

So today, I thought I'd see how well she knew them. I held both books up in front of her and recited the first few lines from the Wocket book.

"Did you ever have the feeling there's a zamp in the lamp? Or a nink in the sink? Or a woset in the closet?"

And she grabbed the Dr. Seuss book.

So I mixed them around and tried again.

"Bard can open his eyes, big and wide. Wow!"

And she grabbed the mirror book.

We did it over and over and over. At least ten times, and she got it right every time.

Could be a fluke...but we'd rather assume she's just book smart.

p.s. apologies for the delay in postings. between our trip to portland and returning to reality, life's been busy. watch for more photos coming soon!
