Owie? What Owie?

Riley got her first real owie last night when she tripped outside and skinned her knuckle.

Since then I've learned that bandages aren't really to protect the wound or expedite healing.

They're actually to distract from the wound's pain (or, hours later, the memory of the pain). And bandages covered with Elmo or Care Bears are exceptionally distracting.

* I predict these will become the newest Riley Obsession.

You're a smart mommy to have already stocked up. My kids have a mean mommy that buys boring bandaids - but luckily Santa brings fun ones in their stockings and they are very stingy with them, knowing they have to last an entire year. Only the really "good" owies get the character bandaids.

First owie? impressive...

We prefer the Nexcare Tattoo bandages. They are waterproof and stay on longer. Of course, Hannah has a major meltdown every time she sees blood or even a red spot on her skin. So, we leave bandages on a good long time. :)

We have cold packs from The Container Store (little miss helpful and mr happy) in the fridge, just for owies. They work like a charm -- kid gets something cold and soothing, kid gets something special, kid gets some attention, owie completely forgotten about. Best $10 I ever spent.
