Yeah, We Love it Here

It was a year ago this week that we moved from here:

To here:

Here's what we miss about Houston:

  • Our friends/family
  • Hermann Park. Everything about it.
  • Rice University (the running trail and free concerts)
  • The Central Market, my favorite uppity grocery store
  • The Fiesta, my favorite ghetto grocery store
  • The Museum District (and free museum night, in particular)
  • Texas barbecue. Mmmmm....meat....
  • The hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese restaurants in third ward
Here's what we love about Portland:
  • Our friends/family
  • The farmer's markets
  • Our little condo (squeaky floors and all)
  • Our pedestrian-friendly neighborhood (I haven't driven in more than a week!)
  • Public transportation (I repeat: I haven't driven in more than a week!)
  • The waterfront
  • Downtown
  • Forest Park
  • The zoo
  • The Rose Gardens
  • The Springwater Corridor
  • Powell's Books
  • Trader Joe's
  • St. Cupcake, Pizza Schmizza, Mio Gelato, the sushi place across the street, and all the street vendors at 10th and Alder

hmm . . . what do I miss about Salt Lake City?
~family/friends
~White Christmas (usually)
~living in The Village
~everything laid out on a grid
~always knowing my compass directions
~Roy, our lime-green Kia Rio, if "he" hadn't taken $2500 and still refused to work we'd still have "him"
~knowing my way around (the city, the culture, the climate)

Wow! I didn't know that I missed that many things. I'm glad you're in Portland.

Would your list of things you *don't* miss about Houston be longer? Mine would. Texas-sized mosquitoes, 9 months of summer, traffic . . .

We'll have to see some of those things next time we visit. I've heard about Powell's books. And you are so close!

I think that is a very complete list of Portland - it's the "what I miss list" for me. But you must have never hit "NoHo's" or it would be on your list too. Make a date soon and go for Phil's Ono Chicken.

Kathryn,
Houston misses you guys. Cindy and I think about you and little Riley and the mobile I never ordered. Today was Kate's first birthday. Can you believe that? I'm mailing you some of our mosquitoes.
